Description
After collecting you from your chosen location we will travel to the Maxwelltown War Memorial to hear about our local VC winners from World War 1 including Pte James Mackenzie who is commemorated at this War Memorial and at Ploegsteert memorial in Belgium. We will then visit the Devils Porridge museum at Eastriggs to hear the incredible story of HM Factory Gretna and its role in the munitions industry. Lunch will either be at the Devils Porridge Museum or in the historic town of Gretna Green. At Gretna Green we will travel to see the site of the Quintinshill train disaster which took place in May 1915 and killed over 200 people. This is the worst rail disaster in British History. Whilst at Gretna there will be time to visit the famous Blacksmiths Shop and museum to find out why this village become so popular. The tour then returns to Dumfries and visit the Museum to consider the artefacts and history of the region with a specific focus on World War 1. At the end of the tour we will drop you back at the location of your choice.
