Description
This tour has a clear focus on medieval Scotland and visits some of the most important sites of the Scottish Wars of independence.
Doune Castle is a fantastic start to the day as this castle dates back to 1260 and became the home of the Stewart family with close links to the monarchy of Scotland. Doune is also well known for its pivotal role in the hit TV Series Outlander.
As we cross the Teith and the Forth rivers and move into Stirling we will visit Bannockburn which was the site of our most famous battle in 1314. The magnificent 3D presentation in the visitor centre is a great addition to the site and a must see. We will then move out to the rotunda and statue of Robert the Bruce and consider the battlefield and tactics of the victory in much more detail. In Stirling we will visit the Auld Brig which was the site of William Wallace’s and Andrew de Moray’s famous victory in 1297. We will get another view of the 1297 Battlefield from the Abbey Craig at the wonderful national Wallace Monument. Stirling Castle is one of our most iconic buildings and time is required to explore the huge changes as the defensive keep moved into a French palace. We will ensure that you get time at each fantastic stop.
The day will end with a visit to the beautiful Kelpies who symbolise the mystique of our water creatures with post-industrial Scotland. We are certain that you will be in awe of these fantastic Andy Scott sculptures which sit beside the canal.
